After a long cold winter (at least in Maryland where I live) signs of spring abound and the days are growing warmer! It’s time to enjoy the great outdoors and care for God’s creation (including creatures).

I’m Karen Whiting, a friend of Sherry’s and I also write books for girls. My newest book is Nature Girl: a guide to caring for God’s creation. As the title suggests it’s about nature, the outdoors, and also saving resources and adding a little more green to your life.

Try some of these ideas from the book:

  • What worms can tell you about your soil. Dig up one square foot of soil and count the number of worms in it. Ten and more says you’ve got soil that’s rich in organic matter.

  • Plant a bean teepee. Put a stick in the ground and plant beans in a circle around the pole. As the beans grow wind the vine around the top of the pole. Plant seeds far enough out to fit inside and leave a space for the door!

  • CD recycling fun. Recycle old CDS by cutting them into pieces and using them for mosaics. Glue them on clear plastic ornaments or foam balls for little disco balls. Or decorate them to use as photo frames or coasters.

  • Be an air detector. Tape a strip of tissue paper to a stick. Hold it up to windows and doors to see if the paper flutters. If it does, air is passing through and there’s a leak.

  • Mini quiz:

Match the beauty secret ingredient to the tip

1. Brown sugar and olive oil                 A. Eliminate dark circles under eyes

2. Raw potato slices                                  B. Exfoliate lips

3. Sea salt and baby oil                             C. Soften/exfoliate skin
